One of the biggest mistakes therapists make is assuming experience automatically creates improvement.
It doesn’t.
Experience only becomes valuable when you take the time to evaluate it.
That’s why Standard #5 of the Fully Booked Therapist framework is simple: fully booked therapists self coach and they evaluate on purpose.
They don’t wait for problems to become obvious. They don’t only reflect when something goes wrong. They create a system for learning from every interaction, every session, every rebook conversation, and every result they create.
Evaluation creates awareness, which makes improvement possible.
Most therapists finish a session, move directly to the next client, and only revisit the interaction if something felt uncomfortable or went badly.
The problem with that approach is that you’re missing valuable information. Small improvements happen through paying attention to the details of what worked and what didn’t.
When you consistently evaluate your interactions, you begin collecting data that helps you improve your communication, your rebooking process, your client experience, and your results.
Identifying what went well helps therapists repeat behaviors that create positive results.
The first question in the evaluation framework is simple:
What went well?
Most therapists immediately focus on mistakes because of the brain’s natural negativity bias. They overlook the things that worked and miss opportunities to intentionally repeat those behaviors.
Maybe you listened carefully. Maybe you confidently asked for the rebook. Maybe you stayed calm during a difficult conversation.
When you identify what worked, you create a roadmap for repeating success.
Therapists should evaluate their own actions rather than blaming clients or circumstances.
The second question is:
What didn’t go well?
This question only works when the focus stays on you.
Not the client.
Not the circumstance.
Not the economy.
Not the schedule.
The goal is to identify what you did or didn’t do that contributed to the result. Taking ownership allows you to make meaningful changes because your behavior is the one variable you can control.
Specific plans create consistency because they remove guesswork from future interactions.
The third question is:
What will I do the same or differently next time?
This is where evaluation becomes practical.
Rather than writing vague goals such as “I’ll do better,” fully booked therapists create specific plans. They identify the exact words they’ll use, the exact question they’ll ask, or the exact step they’ll take.
The more specific the plan becomes, the easier it is to execute during the next interaction.
Self coaching helps therapists become their own first investigator and problem solver.
Many people assume self coaching means positive thinking or repeating affirmations. That’s not what I’m talking about.
Self coaching is the ability to examine a situation, identify your thoughts, understand your feelings, evaluate your actions, and determine what result those actions created.
When therapists learn this skill, they become less dependent on outside direction and more capable of creating solutions on their own. They bring better questions to coaching, make faster improvements, and develop stronger business skills over time.
If you’re ready to build your fully booked practice inside a real container with real coaching and a community of therapists doing this work alongside you, come find me at HeatherHammel.com.
Foundations is where these standards stop being ideas and start becoming your actual practice. It’s where we learn how to evaluate intentionally, self coach effectively, and create meaningful improvements one interaction at a time.
